nicholas christenson is a composer and bassist in new york city. in addition to long-term collaborations with ivan cunningham and astrid hubbard flynn, he has performed and recorded with musicians including douglas ewart, daniel carter, jean-jacques birgé, and noah ophoven-baldwin. his recordings, including duck soup, which was featured in an installation at the 2022 venice biennale, have appeared on independent labels such as klanggalerie and grrr. his experimental scores and free improvisations are characterized by extremely quiet sounds, novel acoustic timbres, and attention to the act of listening. christenson grew up in the jazz scene of the twin cities before receiving a bachelor’s degree in music and french and francophone studies from vassar college in 2021, subsequently living in alaska and france before moving to new york to pursue a master’s degree at the new school. he also makes sixteen-millimeter films which have screened in europe and the us.
